João Pessoa

In the northeast of Brazil there is a city called Joao Pessoa (the literal translation is John Person - named after an important politician). This city is right on the coast and has a geographic location of some significance. It is the eastern most city in the Americas, thus making it fairly close to Africa. It is also the third oldest city in Brazil.

The picture above is a farol or lighthouse on the eastern most point. This is a monument constructed on April 21, 1972. Below that picture is a sign that is in the same location explaining about Joao Pessoa and it geographic location. The geographic coordinates for the city are 34º 47' 38" west longitude and 7º 9' 28" south latitude. Below is a picture taken while I was on the eastern most shore of Joao Pessoa. The city is also said to be "where the sun comes first."

Joao Pessoa is a fairly poor city that is trying to make tourism a more profitable market. The beaches in the city are fairly unknown. Thus the beaches in Joao Pessoa being fairly desolate in comparison to other famous beaches, Joao Pessoa would be an excellent place to go if searching for great beaches and less people.
